‘PORTRAIT OF DAZZLE’ — A SOLO EXHIBITION BY SHIGEKI MATSUYAMA

‘Portrait of Dazzle’ is the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong by Japanese contemporary artist Shigeki Matsuyama, presented by Quiet Gallery.

Born in 1973, Matsuyama started working as a freelance illustrator for 13 years before he transitioned into more conceptual work using painting and installation art. Breaking with tradition, he employs his unique artistic style and techniques to create his signature form of ‘modern portrait painting’.

In this exhibition of new portraiture and sculpture, the artist utilises camouflage elements and a monochromatic palette of black-and-white stripes to depict his subject matter. With appearances partly ‘hidden’ to deliver impact through the eyes, Matsuyama’s works reflect the nature of humanity
by highlighting commonalities as well as individualities.

‘Portrait of Dazzle’ is on show at BELOWGROUND from 3 May to 19 May 2024. Follow @belowground.hk on Instagram for regular updates.
