“Over the Rainbow” is a new solo exhibition by Japanese artist Kohei Ogawa, presented by Quiet Gallery in collaboration with JPS Gallery.
Inspired by the classic story of The Wizard of Oz, iconic characters from this world – Dorothy, Toto, the Tinman, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion – are combined with the artist’s own “Green Cow Garden” creations to produce a magical series of new works.
Using his signature blend of realism and whimsical art style, Ogawa takes these beloved characters and makes them uniquely his own. 90 artworks, all presented in small-sized watercolours except for two large-scale paintings in acrylic, will be exhibited at Quiet Gallery. Each artwork focuses on an individual character from the story which follows the adventures of Dorothy as she is whisked away by a tornado and embarks upon a journey to the Emerald City, in search of the Wizard to find the way back home.
Drawing upon themes of overcoming challenges and the feeling of being adrift in a different world, Ogawa takes the audience along this journey down the yellow brick road, fully immersing them in his imaginings.
A further 20 acrylic paintings will also be shown at JPS Gallery in Landmark Atrium (from 1 February until 2 March) where the space will be transformed into scenes from ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Limited vinyl figures from the artist’s ‘Green Cow Garden’ series will also be available for purchase during the exhibition period.
“Over the Rainbow” is on show at BELOWGROUND from 1 February to 18 February, 2024.
