BELOWGROUND is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong of Japanese artist and professional skateboarder Hiroki Muraoka entitled ‘Switch’, the exhibition showcases 18 recent works by the artist, displaying how his love for the sport is reimagined through the vivid dynamism seen in his works.
Since picking up his first skateboard at the age of 9, Muraoka has been pursuing it professionally whilst exploring his passion for art in his off time. Known for his brightly coloured acrylic works that typically depict skateboarders zooming around through a flattened perspective, art and skateboarding become symbiotic forms of expression, allowing him to channel his creativity through two different disciplines.
“I like to connect the lines of the picture in a way that feels good, similar to the flow of skateboarding”, the artist explains. With titles like ‘Fail’, ‘Karma’ and ‘More Karma’, Muraoka takes a humorous approach in his depiction of skateboarding in his works, allowing the audience to feel the thrill of bodies in fluid motion and experience the ups and downs of the game.
A limited edition t-shirt in collaboration with ZISE by Asterisk will also be available for purchase during the exhibition period. Presented in two colourways of black and white, the t-shirts comes illustrated with two different designs by Muraoka.
