‘In Plain Sight’ — Solo Exhibition by Andy Rementer

‘In Plain Sight’, the solo exhibition by American contemporary artist Andy Rementer opens at BELOWGROUND. Presented by Quiet Gallery and curated by WAY by Way of Difference, the show provides a full overview of the artist’s oeuvre, featuring 14 figurative paintings and 3 sculptures — including 5 rare artworks in die-cut shape specially created for this exhibition in Hong Kong.

Rementer’s work is characterised by pensive characters and still lives depicted with flattened perspective amidst brightly coloured settings. Drawing upon earlier traditions inspired by the Renaissance, Fernand Léger and Nathalie du Pasquier, the artist brings us into the poetic and dream-like world of his imagination through the concept of the gaze. Centred around the act of being seen, the audience is invited to form a visual interaction with the characters in the paintings, creating a sense of intimacy.

“My figures often become sort of characters on stage, in direct contact with the viewers, almost like a ballet performance where dancers are always facing the audience,” explains Rementer.

Further exhibition highlights come with 3 life-sized sculptures, co-produced by WAY by Way of Difference and How2Work. Arranged throughout the space, the new works present Rementer’s characters in 3D, allowing the audience to admire them from a variety of perspectives.

A limited-edition collection of affordable artworks and lifestyle products, including a pin, vinyl figure, archival prints and tote bags, will also be available for purchase throughout the exhibition period.
